VHF Lifts

The effect of 'tropospheric ducts' on VHF Propagation.

Article

An early (and slightly out-of-date) piece of research into Tropospheric Ducts, entitled 'On the very highs' proved useful to me when I was first learning about the subject, so I provide a copy on this site now that the copyright has expired.

In December 1996, I recorded French local radio station Radio France Normandy Caen from my home in Devon, thanks to a tropospheric duct on VHF. These only occur a few days per year in any intensity and normally happen when radio waves are bent in the troposphere, thanks to a temperature inversion, and so they are most likely to occur during periods of stable high-pressure.

This SMIL presentation (requires RealPlayer™ 8 or later) is designed to demonstrate what may be heard under such conditions to somebody who has never before heard a 'lift'.
