Visalia DX Convention

Our first day of of our trip to the States en route to the Visalia DX Convention. Today, we left Palm Desert, CA and went into the Arizona desert. We had lunch in Prescott, AZ and then went to the former mining ghost town of Sedona. We then took the road into the Red Rock park before heading towards the Grand Canyon which we will visit tomorrow. My photoset, which will be updated as the trip progresses, can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dnas2/sets/72157600117767416/

Spent yesterday at the Grand Canyon, once during the daytime when we had a 3 mile walk along the South rim, and then again in the evening to see the sunset. Again, photos from the day are now on Flickr and I should point out that they are geotagged at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dnas2/map/

Yesterday we left the Grand Canyon and went just over the border into Utah to visit Monument Valley, where several Westerns were filmed. We then drove back to Williams, AZ. Today, the plan is to drive to Hoover Dam and then on to Las Vegas, NV, for lunch before driving through Death Valley this afternoon.

Yesterday, we left Williams, AZ and went up into Nevada to have lunch in Las Vegas. From there, we came back into California again, via Death Valley - consistently one of the hottest places on Earth. The car thermometer was reading 104F (about 41C) for most of the journey. After that, it's quite strange looking up at snow-capped mountains from our motel at Lone Pine, CA this morning. Next step Visalia for the convention and I'm giving my presentation tonight.

The Visalia DX Convention closes after breakfast this morning. The convention has been a great success, by and large, and my presentation of the new IOTA web-based software received some very positive comments. The convention's theme is "Elmering new DXers is job #1" but I'm slightly concerned whether everyone there is ready to take on this challenge. Some interesting discussions in the DX Forum included the use of DXpedition sponsorship money and in the Contest Forum the possibility of making contests more transparent through the public release of UBNs and audio recordings. Anyway, tonight we're flying back to the UK and I'll be landing back at Heathrow at about 15:30 tomorrow.

After driving over two thousand miles in one week, Martin and I are now back from California. It was a great time and the convention in Visalia at the end was as enjoyable as ever. We also got to see some impressive sights and experienced almost every type of weather from snow at 0C to wall-to-wall sunshine at 41C. Thanks to Martin for taking me, as ever. My next foreign trip will be to the Dayton radio fair in Ohio in just under three weeks' time.
All of my photos from the trip to California are now online at https://www.flickr.com/photos/dnas2/sets/72157600117767416/ and you can see where they were taken by clicking on the 'map' link on that page.
